Is Eloping Right for You? – Why Couples Elope
Despite the stereotypes, eloping is not “running off to Niagara” like it used to be. There has been a shift over the years in what eloping means. Instead of a hasty way to get married, eloping is a thoughtful and intentional way to commit to each other. There are many reasons why couples elope and it’s not just to save money! Here are some patterns that I’ve found in couples I work with who choose to elope. Maybe you’ll see yourself on this list!
(This list is not all encompassing! Some of these points may be the opposite of why you want to elope, but still might give you some things to consider when making the decision on how you want to commit to your life partner.)
You value experiences
If you’re someone who likes to live in the moment and soak everything in, the go-go-go nature of a traditional wedding might not be a good fit! Don’t get me wrong, I love the adrenaline rush of a large party-packed wedding. But rushing around and mingling all day leaves some couples feeling overwhelmed. Regardless of how many guests are there, I help my couples carve out some “just them” time, usually during our portraits, to help them soak everything in. In a long day with a big crowd, this sometimes isn’t enough. If you would like a more laid back approach where the focus is on the experiences that you and your partner create together, eloping might be a great fit. Your day could be filled with a relaxing hike, romantic picnic, going to your favourite restaurant, or any of your favourite hobbies. If popping champagne while overlooking epic views is more your style than sitting through an hour of toasts, then eloping might be perfect for you!
You’re a private couple
If you’re a couple who feels super awkward being the centre of attention, a traditional large wedding likely isn’t for you. Large weddings are a great fit for lots of people, but not everybody. Unfortunately, I have photographed weddings where the couple is clearly uncomfortable with the number of guests. They have to hunt down RSVPS, they’re surrounded by family friends they don’t even know, family drama arises, they feel pressure to mingle and they barely get to spend any time together as a couple. If this sounds like a disaster to you, eloping might the way to go.
Eloping is a personal way for you to commit your life to your partner that is perfect for couples who want something intimate. The most meaningful part of the day is usually reading your vows to each other, and imagine how peaceful this would be in the middle of a forest, just the two of you (and your photographer hiding out of sight with a long lens capturing all of the emotions!)
You’re adventurous
Do you have a dream spot where you and your partner love to visit? Maybe you want to explore somewhere new? In that case, be bold and do an adventure elopement! There are many gorgeous outdoor wedding venues in Ontario, but if you want something off the beaten path, then you should plan a gorgeous elopement in a one-of-a-kind location! Imagine going back to that spot every year on your anniversary! A knowledgeable elopement photographer can help you narrow down a perfect location that considers length of hike, accessibility, accommodating guests and more!
You want your reception separate from your wedding day (if at all)
Is party planning your worst nightmare? Then don’t make party planning a part of your wedding day! That’s it. It’s literally as simple as that!
You’re in a time crunch
Eloping isn’t just about a quickly getting married, but in general, it can be quicker to plan! When planning a traditional wedding, your day usually revolves around venue and catering availability. This can sometimes mean years of waiting. For an elopement, you can find yourself an officiant, a photographer, a license (and sometimes a location permit) and away you go! City Hall is always an option for a time crunch, but if you love the outdoors, why get married inside?!?
